The Calling
Every Tuesday at 101 S H St. Aberdeen,
Guests: 6 PM.
Volunteers: 5 PM
The Calling exists to make disciples of the poor in Grays Harbor.
Definitions:
Make Disciples: Disciples are made by the clear proclamation of the gospel, baptism, and teaching of Jesus’ commands.
What is the Gospel?
We are all sinners. We are dead in our sins and tresspasses. We all need forgiveness and reconciliation with God.
God sent his Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross in our place and take the wrath of God that we all deserve upon himself.
Those who believe and repent of their sin receive God’s salvation freely and are given a new life in Christ and are brought into God’s family.
Disciples are made through personal relationships. We exist not just to preach to the poor but to connect with them and build relationships that will develop into a life of discipleship.
The Poor: This word encompasses a large group of people that is difficult to define since it is not a monolith. Jesus uses 4 different words in Luke 4:18-19 that accurately encapsulate this group. The poor (poor, beggar, a person of few resources, culturally considered oppressed, despised, and miserable), the captive, the blind (both physically and spiritually), and the oppressed (broken, downtrodden).
“Poverty is the result of relationships that do not work, that are not just, that are not for life, that are not harmonious or enjoyable. Poverty is the absence of shalom in all its meanings” (Bryant L. Myers, Walking with the Poor).
Ultimately poverty is caused by a broken relationship with God, with self, with others and with the rest of creation.
The Calling is convinced that the number one solution to the problem of poverty is a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Therefore, our primary goal is to make disciples of Jesus.
How will we accomplish this mission?
Building real relationships
Shared meals.
Prayer.
Conversation.
Service.
Preaching the gospel boldly and clearly.
Weekly Gospel Message
Gospel proclaimed individually during conversations.
Identifying people who are receptive to the gospel or have already been transformed by it, and coming around them to help them, disciple them, support them, and provide them with a community that will help them get on their feet.
What are our Rhythms?
Weekly Bible Study and Dinner.
We offer a free meal, no strings attached to anyone who wants to join.
People are our guests, not our projects.
We serve them, eat with them, connect with them.
A gospel message is presented to whoever decides to stay for it.
Personal Discipleship.
Once individuals are identified as people who really want freedom, churches welcome them into their family life, pour on them, help them, and disciple them.
Is The Calling a Charity?
We are not a charity. The main reason we are ministering to the poor is not because they are poor (homeless, addicted, oppressed, etc.) but because they are sinners in need of salvation just like everyone else on the Harbor.
With that said, we do hold special considerations given the fact that the majority of people we are serving fit the description of poverty and the Biblical command we have from Jesus and the apostles is to care for the poor.
We have meals with them not as charitable benefactors but as humble hosts. They are coming to have dinner with us and we are building relationships with them and proclaiming the good news to them.
